The ground is in Tammela, about ten minutes' walk north-east of the railway station and next to the Tammelantori market square — head up from Hämeenkatu and it is built into the block. Trams and buses stop within a few minutes' walk.

Public transport
Tampere opened a tram network in 2021 and it is the quickest way across the city, alongside the Nysse buses. A single ticket is around €2.20 in the Nysse app or by contactless card on board, with day tickets available; the same ticket covers trams and buses. The centre — Hämeenkatu, the station, the market halls and the stadium — is a 15-minute walk end to end. Trains from Helsinki take an hour and a half and arrive in the middle of town.

✈ Airports & cheaper alternatives
- Tampere-Pirkkala Airport TMP primary 17 km A Nysse bus runs from the terminal into the city centre in about 35 minutes for a standard fare; a taxi is €40–50. Ryanair's Finnish airport, with a small number of European routes — cheap when it works for your dates.
- Helsinki-Vantaa Airport HEL alternative 180 km Ring-rail to Tikkurila or Helsinki Central, then an intercity train to Tampere — about two hours in total for €20–35 booked ahead. Direct coaches also run. Far more flights and an easy rail transfer; the usual choice for anyone coming from the UK or Ireland.

Ilves Tampere
Home fans: Ilves supporters gather in the bars around Tammela and along Hämeenkatu before games — with the ground built into the neighbourhood, the nearest pubs effectively are the club's, and they fill from a couple of hours before kick-off.
Away fans: Everything central is neutral and within a ten-minute walk of the stadium; Plevna at Finlayson is the obvious meeting point for a group. Finnish football has no hostility towards away support.
A club better known historically for ice hockey, now established in the football top flight and playing at the new Tammelan Stadion.

Nightlife
Hämeenkatu and the streets off it carry most of the bars, with the old Finlayson and Tampella factory buildings converted into restaurants and breweries. Plevna in the Finlayson complex brews on site and is the obvious first stop. Student bars around the university keep prices down, and the city has a strong live-music tradition. The real Tampere evening, though, is a public sauna: Rajaportti in Pispala is the oldest working one in Finland, Kaupinoja and Rauhaniemi are lakeside and let you swim between rounds.
Food & drink
Mustamakkara — black sausage eaten with lingonberry jam — is the Tampere speciality, sold at the Tammelantori market square, which happens to be right by the stadium. The two indoor market halls, Kauppahalli and Tammelan, are the best cheap eating in town. Otherwise it is Finnish standards: salmon soup, rye bread, meatballs, and very good coffee consumed in quantity. Plevna and the other local breweries cover the beer.
Cheap eats & beer
Weekday lunch buffets run €11–14 and are the best value of the day. Mustamakkara from Tammelantori is a couple of euros, the market halls do plates for €10–14, and kebab-pizza joints around €10. Beer is €7–8.50 in a bar, less at the student places, and about €2 from a supermarket, where sales stop at 21:00; anything stronger is Alko, closed on Sundays. Match evenings in Tammela mean the bars nearest the ground fill early.
Staying safe
Tampere is safe, easy and used to visitors, and away fans attract friendly curiosity rather than trouble. The usual small print: taxis are expensive and deregulated, so use an app; cycle lanes are busy and fast; and the weekend crowd on Hämeenkatu is loud but harmless. If you use a public sauna, the etiquette is straightforward — wash first, sit quietly, and take the plunge into the lake with everyone else.
On matchday
Ilves play at the Tammelan Stadion, a compact ground opened in 2024 in the Tammela district with flats built around three sides of it — about ten minutes' walk north-east of the railway station and right beside the Tammelantori market square. It holds around 8,000, so European ties sell out and tickets should be bought ahead. Away fans get a corner section with their own entrance, stewarding is relaxed, and beer is sold in the licensed concourse areas. Being this central, the bars are a two-minute walk after the final whistle.
